LOS ANGELES / CHATSWORTH CA – A Metrolink train had failed to stop for a red light signal, resulting in a Friday collision with a freight train, according to the commuter train’s operators. More than 138 passengers were injured and 25 fatalities from this LA tragic train wreck accident.

“Our staff is looking to do what we can to help the families of the passengers affected by this tragedy,” Metrolink spokesman Steve Lantz said. “We hope never to have this happen again. We hope people will have their confidence returned to ride with us.”

Investigators are unsure why the train with 220 people aboard failed to stop for a red light.  This is the worst train wreck in 15 years since 1993, when a Amtrak Sunset Limited fell off a trestle into a bayou near Mobile, Ala., 47 people were killed.

Commuter trains were set to travel Monday morning between downtown Los Angeles and Chatsworth, with closures or bus service from stations farther out on the Ventura County line. Officials hoped to have the entire line ready by the end of the day.

“Our staff is looking to do what we can to help the families of the passengers affected by this tragedy,” Metrolink spokesman Steve Lantz said. “We hope never to have this happen again. We hope people will have their confidence returned to ride with us.”
